Building Skills and Breaking Myths: Profits and Plunder – Re-examining the Drain Theory.

The Postgraduate Department of History and West Asian Studies at EMEA College of Arts & Science, Kondotty, recently hosted a vibrant debate titled "Building Skills and Breaking Myths: Profits and Plunder – Re-examining the Drain Theory." The event took place on September 15th, 2025, at 10:00 AM in the II MA History classroom, bringing together students and faculty for an engaging discussion on colonial economic impact.

Focusing on the drain theory—an essential concept in Indian economic historiography—the debate encouraged participants to critically evaluate traditional perspectives on colonial-era profits and exploitation. The session fostered analytical skills and encouraged students to challenge and reconsider widely held historical beliefs.

Organized under the guidance of coordinator Sehla Khansah P, this debate formed part of the department's commitment to enhancing academic skills and promoting critical thought among history scholars. The event was well-received and provided a valuable platform for intellectual exchange and academic growth.
